Jó tomou a palavra nestes termos:
Sois mesmo gente muito hábil, e convosco morrerá a sabedoria.
Tenho também o espírito como o vosso (não vos sou inferior): quem, pois, ignoraria o que sabeis?
Os amigos escarnecem daquele que invoca Deus para que ele lhe responda, e zombam do justo e do inocente.
Vergonha para a infelicidade! É o modo de pensar do infeliz; só há desprezo para aquele cujo pé fraqueja.
As tendas dos bandidos gozam de paz; segurança para aqueles que provocam Deus, que não têm outro Deus senão o próprio braço.
Pergunta, pois, aos animais e eles te ensinarão; às aves do céu e elas te instruirão.
Fala (aos répteis) da terra, e eles te responderão, e aos peixes do mar, e eles te darão lições.
Entre todos esses seres quem não sabe que a mão de Deus fez tudo isso,
ele que tem em mãos a alma de tudo o que vive, e o sopro de vida de todos os humanos?
Não discerne o ouvido as palavras como o paladar discerne o sabor das iguarias?
A sabedoria pertence aos cabelos brancos, a longa vida confere a inteligência.
Em (Deus) residem sabedoria e poder; ele possui o conselho e a inteligência.
O que ele destrói não será reconstruído; se aprisionar um homem, ninguém há que o solte.
Quando faz as águas pararem, há seca; se as soltar, submergirão a terra.
Nele há força e prudência; ele conhece o que engana e o enganado;
faz os árbitros andarem descalços, torna os juízes estúpidos;
desata a cinta dos reis e cinge-lhes os rins com uma corda;
faz os sacerdotes andarem descalços, e abate os poderosos;
tira a palavra aos mais seguros de si mesmos e retira a sabedoria dos velhos;
derrama o desprezo sobre os nobres, afrouxa a cinta dos fortes,
põe a claro os segredos das trevas, e traz à luz a sombra da morte.
Torna grandes as nações, e as destrói; multiplica os povos, depois os suprime.
Tira a razão dos chefes da terra e os deixa perdidos num deserto sem pista;
andam às apalpadelas nas trevas, sem luz; tropeçam como um embriagado.
